Last week, Norwalk Grows hosted a very important event, the first ever Iron Chef School Lunch Competition… and I got to be a judge.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Norwalk Grows Program, Norwalk Grows, builds organic gardens that are taken care of by Norwalk Public School students.  We have one at our school, which is where our story begins…

265325_10151139582481380_942728444_oFifth grade students at Naramake Elementary School were given the challenge of using fruits and vegetables from our garden to create a new dish that would be judged. The winning dish would become part of the Norwalk School Cafeteria’s city-wide lunch menu.

The competition took place at Norwalk High School in their Culinary Arts Classroom.  The classroom is nothing like my classroom — it’s more like a HUGE restaurant kitchen.

photo copyThe panel of 8 judges included, Norwalk’s Mayor, The Honorable Richard Moccia, our school Principal, Ms. Karen Ockasi, Norwalk Board of Education Member Mr. Steve Colarossi, Mr. Anthony Alison of The Norwalk Children’s Foundation, and Executive Chef Pasquale (Pat) Pascarella from Bar Sugo in Norwalk.  There were also judges from Whitson’s Culinary Group who make all of the food for all of the Norwalk schools.

rickOur MC for the event was Mr. Rick McQuaid… our Town Clerk… who also used to work at my school.  The room was filled with tension as the students rushed to make their dish perfect, in time for the judges to taste them.

judge2When time was up, Mr. McQuaid reminded every one of the rules and then the judges got down to business…

First up… a Potato and Kale Fritatta

frit

It was delicious, but I wasn’t sure if kids would really eat it because of how it looks – But, I’m sure if they tried it they would love it because it was super tasty.  One thing that was cool about this recipe, was the fritattas were made in a muffin pan — very innovative!

Next… Pesto Pasta or as they called it “Pasta With Green Sauce”

pesto

Totally good, I loved the pesto, but I thought it could use some garlic.  Kids love Pasta, but I’m not sure every kid would eat “Green Pasta” – remember, these are kids grades K-12… so we have to pick a dish that we knew that most kids would like.

Our final entry and the Winner… VEGETABLE FRIED RICE!

rice

The winning recipe used very interesting ingredients, one was Bok Choy - which is a Chinese vegetable, it was very flavorful and most important it was colorful, and looked appetizing for a kid.

chefsA special Sunday Diners Congratulations to the winners!  I’m looking forward to having your creation for lunch soon, and thanks to all of the students who entered.

grows logoWe also want to give a shout out to Mrs. Lisa Lenskold for asking me to be a judge and for all of the great work she does as the Director of Norwalk Grows.

Now it’s your turn… You tell us which dish you think should have won…

ERIN GO BREAKFAST! St.Paddy’s Day at O’Neill’s In Norwalk

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY FROM SUNDAY DINERS

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we decided to go for a real Irish Breakfast – so we went to the most Irish place in Norwalk, O’Neill’s Pub & Restaurant.  O’Neill’s is owned by Ollie O’Neill, his brother Mick and their best friend Donny (who’s real name is Donal) Leahy — Ollie and Mick are from Tipperary, in Ireland, so you know breakfast is going to be seriously Irish!

The first thing I noticed — it was not like any breakfast place — O’Neill’s on St. Patrick’s Day is more like a party at 9:00 AM!  There were tons of people dressed in green, an Irish musician playing, a bagpiper and a line for the Irish Breakfast Buffet.   The pub looks like an authentic Irish pub with Irish signs and it was decorated with lots of shamrocks.  The place also seems very popular with police and firemen, because there were a lot of them there!

After we found a table, we headed straight for the buffet!

IMG-20130317-00870

Here’s what dad and I had… Scrambled Eggs, Sautéed Tomatoes and Mushrooms, Baked Beans, Rashers (which is a type of Irish Bacon), Bangers (an Irish Sausage) and Black & White Pudding – which is definitely not dessert pudding.  Black & White Pudding is kind of sausage.  What is the difference between the Black and White kinds?  Black Pudding is made with Pigs Blood — I know that sounds GROSS!  But… it tastes REALLY good — so good I had seconds.  White Pudding is the same thing but made with liver and not blood.  It’s really good too.  I also had O’Neill’s Special Irish Soda Bread, which is Mr. Ollie and Mr. Mick’s mom’s recipe — I told Mr. Ollie that it was so good it tasted like having Butter on Butter!!!

If you’re really hungry, the Irish Breakfast is the thing for you!

IMG-20130317-00871I spoke with Victoria Walsh, our server, about St. Patrick’s Day at O’Neill’s and how many people will visit the restaurant today.

She said, “I don’t know but I would guess thousands! “

She also told me the main difference between a Banger and an American sausage is the texture.  Our sausages are more meaty… Bangers are more grainy.

IMG-20130317-00878I also spoke to Kristi Crivellone, who told me a bit about the pub.  She told me:

“Ollie and his brother are from Tipperary, and Tipperary’s colors are blue and gold, those colors are part of the look of the pub.”

Wow – Blue and Gold are also my school colors!

Thanks Mr. Ollie, Ms. Kristi and Ms. Victoria! Hope you have a Great St. Patrick’s Day!

Last Sunday, I went to see The Lion King on Broadway with my Aunt Martha and Uncle Peter.  It was my first Broadway show and it was exciting!  But before the show, I went to the world-famous Sardi’s.  Sardi’s is a restaurant that many actors like to go to after their shows – the walls are covered with drawings of all the stars and celebrities that have eaten there.  It was super fun, and the service was excellent!

The food was great – I had The Angus Burger.  There was a 10 ounce burger, but I chose the 5 ounce — and it was still so big that I couldn’t finish it!  I could barely hold it!  For dessert, I had the Warm Chocolate Cake with Melted Center, Vanilla Ice Cream, Crème Anglaise and Dots of Chocolate Sauce.  It was warm and comforting on a very cold Sunday.  My Aunt Martha also had the Angus Burger (but with no bun) and loved it.  Uncle Peter had the Coconut Vegetable Tofu Curry – he liked it a lot – and it seemed very healthy!

The Baltimore Crab Cakes Vs. The San Francisco Rustica Welcome To “Benny Bowl 2013″ At Rosie In New Canaan

Today is Super Bowl Sunday and the Baltimore Ravens will be playing the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans.  Here at Sunday Diners… we’re live in New Canaan at Rosie for the 2013 Benny Bowl!  But… we’ll get to that in a minute after we tell you a little bit about Rosie.  Rosie has been open since 2004 and is owned by George and Rosie Nammack. I have one one word for Rosie and it’s… AWESOME!

The first thing you notice when you walk into Rosie is the art on the walls and all of the delicious baked goods on display like muffins, cookies, whoopee pies and especially their Famous Carrot Cake.  The art is by a local artist named David Stevens who paints in a very colorful style and likes to paint people with dogs… there’s even a painting of a pug (which is what my dog Coco is).  Rosie is a very comfortable place, it’s really great for kids, they even have games, toys and books for little kids.  The staff is very friendly and they really make you feel at home.  And now about the food!

Today’s menu had lots of great choices, but since it’s Super Bowl Sunday, my dad and I decided that we would have our own battle pitting two different types of tEggs Benedict on the menu against each other and so, The Benny Bowl was born!

Louisiana Crab Cakes Benny

IMG-20130203-00502

My choice: Representing the AFC and the City of Baltimore (with a little bit of New Orleans) the Louisiana Crab Cakes BennyPoached Eggs, on Crab Cakes with Hollandaise Sauce.

Eggs Benedict Rustica

IMG-20130203-00504

Dad’s Choice: Representing the NFC and the City of San Francisco, The Eggs Benedict Rustica — Poached Eggs, on a Crusty Baguette, Thick-Sliced Peppered Bacon, Roasted Plum Tomato, Fresh Basil, Hollandaise Sauce and Cracked Black Pepper.

Both were so good, if this was a real football game we’d go into overtime!  I’ve never had Crab Cakes for breakfast before – they had a little kick to them (get it?) – but they were really good, I also tried Dad’s Rustica and it was really great too.

And Now For The Halftime Show (Not Starring Beyonce)

IMG-20130203-00501

For the halftime show, instead of Beyonce we had a really special treat; a fresh from the oven Ginger Scone with Maple Butter and a real Honey Comb (made by real bees!)  I never knew that you could eat the honeycomb itself — it was a really great combination.  To drink I had a Chocolate Steamer with Whipped Cream and Cinnamon - YUM!

IMG-20130203-00505

I spoke with Rosie Nammack, and  asked for her Benny Bowl 2013 pick;

IMG-20130203-00508

She said, “I would say it’s a tie, but I really like the Rustica, because I’m Sicilian!”

I also asked her, “What time do you get in to start baking in the morning?”

Rosie told me that, “I get in at 5 AM, to start baking… you really have to be a morning person for this job!”

Rosie’s favorite restaurants are the Whelk and Le Farm in Westport and she told me all about her other favorite, Blue Hill at Stone Barns

She said, “There is no menu, they give you a list of ingredients and then ask you what things you like and they make it for you, everything is fresh because it comes right from their farm.”

I also spoke with Mr. George, who told me that, “Rosie is like an extension of our home, which is what makes it so special”

We were so full, that we did not get to try their Famous Carrot Cake, but we took some home for dessert when we watch The Super Bowl.

Rosie invited me to come back and spend a day working in her kitchen – that would be a lot of fun, so maybe you’ll read about that in in a future post.

Thanks to everyone at Rosie for such an excellent meal!

The Churros At Stamford’s Lorca Are A Slam Dunk!

Lorca is a new spot in Stamford that specializes in Churros.  A Churro is a type of fried dough that is from Spain, it’s like a Spanish dounut, but you get to dip them in delicious sauces.  I never had them before, but my dad did when he would visit Spain, sometimes his grandma made them for him, he also told me that it’s popular in Spain to have Churros as a late-night snack after you go out to nightclubs.

The first thing that I wanted to know was who or what was Lorca?  I found out that Lorca is the name of a very famous Spanish poet, Frederico García Lorca, who the owner loves.  Lorca is owned by Leyla Dam who grew up in Spain and Brooklyn.  She learned how to make Churros in Spain, which is why they are so good.

Outside, Lorca looks like any other coffee shop or restaurant, but when you go inside you see a neon sign that says in big letters “Coffee and Churros”… and a beautiful, colorful mural that reminded my dad and I of the Spanish artist Miro.  There are a few small tables, cool lights and they play great music.  The staff are also very nice.

Now about the food. I started with a Vanilla Steamer, which is steamed milk with Vanilla -it tasted just like melted ice-cream. Dad had a Cortado coffee that they made a design of a heart in the foam.  For breakfast I had Churros!!!  I had them with two of their dipping sauces – Dulce De Leche and Dark Chocolate.  They also have a hazelnut chocolate dipping sauce that I will try next time.  The Churros are crunchy but are soft on the inside and are made fresh for every customer, by Leyla herself – and they were tasty – I had five and could have had twenty more!

IMG-20130119-00379I spoke with Leyla Dam, who owns Lorca about Churros and asked, “What’s the difference between an American donut and a Churro other than the shape?”

She told me that, “Even though they are both a type of fried dough, Churros, are not made with yeast, so, you don’t have to wait for it to rise after you make the dough to fry it.”

IMG-20130119-00370

I also asked Leyla, “What is your favorite dipping sauce?”

She said, “I love the dark chocolate dipping sauce, because that’s the one I grew up with in Spain.”

Lorca is a great place for kids because it’s fun and because kids love to dunk everything!

The Redwood Kitchenette & Bar Sunday Diners in NYC!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Redwood Kitchenette & Bar, 102 Eighth Avenue, NY, NY  www.redwoodkb.com

This our first ever Sunday Diners post from New York City!

Today we came into Manhattan to see one of my dad’s best friends, Peter Hume, who is here visiting from California.  Peter’s friend Brian Gligor, who knows a lot about New York history offered to give us a tour of the World Trade Center Site and the 9-11 memorial.

We started our day with a walk on The High Line which is a park that is built on an old elevated train line that used to deliver supplies and produce to New York City –  now it’s an awesome park. Brian told me that the last train that ran on the High Line in 1980 carried a load of frozen turkeys!  We then checked out The Frying Pan, an old lighthouse ship that is now serves food and drinks — it’s cool, but a little spooky.

After walking around a bit we stopped for brunch at the Redwood Kitchenette & Bar. The first thing that you notice when you walk in is a HUGE Airstream trailer camper — right there in the restaurant! Airstreams are silver and made of aluminum and were one of the first RV’s.  At the Redwood they turned it into a bar!

One thing I can say, is that the food at Redwood is outstanding!

For brunch I had RKB Breakfast Bagel – which is made with their House-Smoked Trout Cream Cheese, Tomatoes, Red Onions, Capers and Lettuce on a Toasted Everything Bagel.  It was big and messy but really good.  I have never had trout before and now I was having it for breakfast. YUM!

But the best part of brunch was we shared an order of Truffled Disco Fries, these were made with French Fries, Truffles, Parmesan and Melted Fontina Cheese – it was both gooey and crispy – and really tasty!

I spoke with our server, Jacob, and asked him, “Where did the Airstream come from?”

He told me that, “It came from New Jersey… But we bought it on e-Bay!”

Wow, that must have been one huge box!  I also asked Jacob, what is his favorite brunch item?

He said “Hands down – It’s the Sweet and Savory”

That must be super popular as Peter, Brian and my Dad had it and it looked awesome. The Sweet and Savory is a Ricotta-Herb Pancake, Heritage Acres Bacon, Sunny Side Up Egg with Peppered Maple Syrup — I’m definitely trying that next time.

By the way, the bathroom is awesome — you have to go through a BIG door that looks like you’re going into a freezer — and  it’s decorated inside with old license plates

The World Trade Center Site and the 9-11 Memorial

Afterwards, Brian gave us a tour of the World Trade Center site and the 9-11 Memorial. The memorial is very beautiful and peaceful.

Brian told me a lot of facts about the site, including that the trees are so special that they have computer chips near their roots that watch their health and were grown on a special farm in New Jersey.

When it is finished, 1 World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the USA, it will be 1776 feet tall. Brian told me that at the very top of the building there used to be a Subway sandwich shop for the workers - it would be lifted to the top floor they were working on, so they could buy lunch up there without having to come all the way down to the street.

If you’re in New York, you should definitely visit the site and the Memorial. To learn more about the Memorial click here

Thanks Brian and Peter!

There’s Lots To “Chews” From The HUGE Menu At The Sherwood Diner…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Sherwood Diner, 901 Post Road East,  Westport CT

Sherwood Diner on Facebook

The Sherwood Diner is a classic-style diner that serves hungry Westporters and travelers 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week! And so, if you’re going to feed all of these people, you must have a HUGE menu… and… the Sherwood definitely does!

I’ve been going to the Sherwood since I was pretty young and it’s always good for lunch, dinner, and especially breakfast.

With so many choices on the menu, it’s always hard to decide what to have.  But I knew that you can’t go wrong with French Toast — so I had the Challah Bread French Toast.  (I’ve loved Challah bread since I was in preschool — we used to have it every Friday).  But when you make French Toast with it, it comes out crispy on the outside and really fluffy on the inside — YUM!  I also had a side of bacon, which was crispy, but melted in your mouth.  To drink, our server, Liz made me a fresh chocolate milk, which she said was her specialty — and it is — it was super-syrupy!

With our awesome server, Liz!

I spoke with Liz, our server, who told me that the Sherwood has been open for over 35 years.

I also asked her, what her favorite breakfast on the menu was and she said,

“I really love the Eggs Benedict”

With Dimitri one of the Sherwood Diner's Owners

My dad had the Eggs Benedict, I tried it and it was really good — especially the sauce which is called Hollandaise sauce.

I also talked with Mr. Dimitri, one of the Sherwood Diner’s owners.

“The menu here is SO big with so many things to choose from,     What was strangest thing that anyone has ever ordered for breakfast at the Sherwood?”

He said… “Wow, that’s a really hard question, but probably the strangest ever was a Chicken Omelet with Fresh Garlic!”

I’m sure that guy was able to keep the vampires away!

Christie’s Country Store… Doing Good For the Community… And Good Breakfasts!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Christie’s Country Store, 161 Cross Highway, Westport, CT

christiescountrystore.com

Christie’s Country Store is located right next to one of my favorite ice-cream places in the world, The Frosty Bear.  So I thought it would probably be good for breakfast too!  And it is.  Like the name says, it’s a real country store that sells fresh made food like baked goods, salads, sandwiches and other food items.

The store has been there since 1926 and the owners, Renee and John Hooper are very kind and generous and like to help the community — today, they were making a BIG pasta lunch for the Senior Center. They also love to support the farmer’s market that they host in front of the country store on Sunday’s during the summer and use a lot of the produce in their cooking.

Today I had the Egg, Bacon & Cheese Sandwich on a toasted poppy-seed bagel — one thing I noticed was that the Egg Sandwiches were very popular, it seemed like every person coming in the store was ordering one — one guy actually came in and bought not one…not two… not three… four or five… BUT six of them!  I wonder if he ate them all himself!  I also had some home fries which were tasty and hot.

Before I had breakfast, I got to taste their homemade jams — not surprisingly they were great!  I loved the Strawberry Lemonade jam so much, that I asked my dad to buy some.  Tonight, I’m going to have it on some vanilla ice cream.

Renee Hooper the OwnerI spoke with Renee Hooper, who owns Christie’s with her husband John and who told me:

“All of our jams and grilling sauces are 100% natural, the first ingredient that you see on the jam label is the fruit.  We only use fruit from the farmer’s market or from local farms.  We are very committed to the Westport community”  “We also do fresh baking everyday and make muffins, cookies and other treats”

Mrs. Hooper also told me a little bit about the history of Christie’s. She told me that Christie’s had been a farm a long time ago and had been a market as well.  The Hooper’s have lived in Westport all of their lives, and her husband’s family had been in the area since the 1600′s!

I also asked her the most important question,

“When will the Frosty Bear open for the season?”

She said, ” The Frosty Bear will open up in May!”

I will definitely be coming back this May for that!
