Speedy Donuts, 116 Connecticut Ave Norwalk, CT

Speedy Donuts has been crafting handmade donuts and serving up breakfast since 1969, it is owned by Alexandra and John Diamantis and was first located in South Norwalk.  In 1980, they moved to Route 1 across the street from the Volk Fire Station.  Speedy’s is a small place, but they serve a BIG breakfast!  So before we get to the awesome donuts, here’s what I had for breakfast…

Today I had two Scrambled Eggs, with Bacon, Home Fries and Whole Wheat Toast.  It was EGG-tastic & BACON-errific!  What’s cool about Speedy’s is if you sit at the counter, you can watch them cook your breakfast.  The chef is named Cruz (just like Victor Cruz!), he has been working at Speedy’s for ten years and keeps his grill spotless!

Once we were done, it was time to try their awesome donuts.  I asked Mrs. Alexandra Diamantis, “What is the most popular donut at Speedy’s?”

She said, “Our bestseller is the Glazed Donut… the next is the Old Fashioned… people also love the Jelly Donuts.”

“All of our donuts are made here, and they are made by hand, not by machines.”

I asked Cruz “What’s the most popular breakfast at Speedy’s?”

He told me, “People love the eggs and the pancakes.  Lots of people order our bacon and egg sandwich too.”

I got to try the Glazed and the Apple Crumble donuts — which were both GREAT!

Speedy’s has a lot of regular customers, today I met Brian and Maria.  Brian was a New York City Firefighter, and Maria is a very good baker, and owns La Dolce Vita Catering, she even studied at the French Culinary Institute.  Brian told me that he LOVES Speedy’s pancakes!

Attack Of Block Island’s Killer Donuts!!!

Payne’s Donuts, Block Island, Rhode Island

Every year, our family spends a week on Block Island.  Block Island is off the coast of Rhode Island and it is about 1 hour by ferry from Point Judith, Rhode Island (on the car ferry) You can also get there from New London, Connecticut or Montauk, New York.

Block Island is a very small island, you could probably drive around the whole island in about a half hour, but it is full of surprises like Payne’s who make The Killer Donut!

There are three types of Killer Donuts: Plain, Sugar and CinnamonThey are a little crunchy on the outside and really fluffy on the inside.  We were lucky we got ours when they were still hot!

I asked Charity Payne, whose Grandma Payne invented the Payne’s Killer Donut in 1963,

“What is the most popular Payne’s Killer Donut”

She said, “Cinnamon is our most popular, followed by the Sugar Donut”.

I ate all three and thought they were DEEEEE-Licious!

Lakeside Diner In Stamford, Serves Breakfast And A “Hole” Lot Of Fun!

Lakeside Diner,  1050 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CT

The Lakeside Diner has been serving breakfast since 1951 and Jane Agostino has owned it for over 27 years. She came here from Denmark when she was 18!

The Lakeside known for two things… it’s by a lake :) and their donuts!

Lakeside donuts are homemade and come in two different kinds… Plain and Sugar.

I asked Ms. Jane: “How many donuts do you sell on a Sunday?”

She said, “Wow,  a lot! — About 30 dozen – sugar is the most popular, I sell ten times the amount of sugar donuts to plain”.

360 Donuts in one day!  That’s a “HOLE” lot of donuts!

If you’re lucky and can get a table by the window, you will see the lake and even some wildlife like fish, ducks and even a beaver!

I had the short stack of pancakes, bacon and a chocolate milk — it was great!  We also bought donuts for the ride home and one for MY MOM!

Lakeside Diner is very popular with kids, and since there are only a few tables, get there early!

Coffee An’ Donut Shop, Westport, CT

Today, we went to Coffee An’ Donut Shop in Westport which we found out about from one of our readers, Alana Frumkes, who works with my dad. She said it would be great for Sunday Diners to check out!… So keep your suggestions coming and we might try them too!

Coffee An’ has been open since 1959, and has been owned by George Vlandis, for 20 years. Get there early before it gets crowded, because the breakfasts are EXCELLENT!

But their real specialty… THE DONUTS!

Coffee An’ donuts are so good that even President Clinton asked them to be sent to The White House!

I asked Mr. George, “What makes your donuts so good?”

He said, “It is my secret recipe!”

I had pancakes, Canadian bacon and a chocolate milk.  Mr. George was so nice, he gave me a free chocolate glazed donut which I will try after lunch!  :)

If you’re near Westport, Come An’ have a donut!
