Ernie’s Old Harbor Restaurant – Eating Like A Real Block Island Local!

Ernie’s Old Harbor Restaurant,  Water Street Block Island

Ernie’s Old Harbor Restaurant is a place that both locals and visitors to Block Island love to go to for a bunch of reasons.  It’s in a great location overlooking the ferry docks and the harbor.  You can sit indoors at a table or at the counter or, you can even sit outside on their deck and enjoy the view.  The food is excellent and so is the service.

Ernie’s is famous on the Island for their Blueberry Pancakes – so I knew  had to try them… but since I was hungry, I had the Hungry Person’s Special  - two Blueberry Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon and Toast – I also had sausages.  To drink I had a fresh Chocolate Milk.

The Blueberry pancakes had so many blueberries in them that I couldn’t believe that they could stick together – delicious!

I asked Jelena Uremovic (l) our hostess and Kara Blood (r) our server about Ernie’s and the original Ernie.

Kara told me that “Ernie started the original restaurant but passed away a few years ago, the restaurant is now owned by Frank and Betty Jean Nicastro.

Jelena, who is from Serbia and comes to Block Island every summer to work, told me that “The locals really love Ernie’s and that every day the most important landowners on the Island come to Ernie’s for breakfast… we call them “The Breakfast Club”.

I also spoke with Frank, the owner and chef and asked him, “How many blueberry pancakes do you make a day?”

He said, “A Lot — TOO MANY!”

He also told me to “Come back and try the McKody”, which is an egg sandwich that is named after his son.

I also spoke to Thomas Hilts, a regular who told me that he comes to Ernie’s every day… loves to sit at the counter and orders the McKody every day!

Now that’s a regular!

Hot Chocolate at…

Bess Eaton Coffee Shop 294 Great Island Road
Narragansett, RI www.BessEaton.com

Before I got on the Block Island Ferry in Point Judith I made sure to have a hot chocolate and donut from Bess Eaton, right next to the Ferry dock.  Really Chocolatey AND Hot! Perfect before the windy Ferry trip!

Rhode Island Clamcakes at…

Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout, 435 Water Street, Block Island, RI

Clamcakes are kind of like a donut – more like a Munchkin — made with dough and yes…clams, clam juice and lots of black pepper.  They are a Rhode Island specialty and Rebecca’s makes good ones — they also make a great hamburger!

Speaking of donuts… we had to go back to…

Payne’s Donuts, Payne’s Dock, Block Island, RI

See our review from last year here!

Payne’s is SO good we keep coming back every year.  They’re a great treat before a big day at the beach.  There are three flavors, Sugar, Cinnamon and Plain.  My favorite are the Cinnamon ones — try to get them while they’re fresh from the oven!

Have a Cupcake at…

Baked On The Block

The Block Island Farmer’s Market,  blockislandfarmersmarket.com

Every Wednesday and Saturday in the summer, Block Island has their Farmer’s Market. There’s lot’s of great things to eat, crafts and even some musicians.  I got to meet Sheri Maxman, who owns Baked On The Block and makes a great cupcake.  I had a vanilla frosted mini-cupcake – awesome!

Get Yak-ed on… by a Yak at…

Abram’s Animal Farm, 1 Spring Street   Like the farm on facebook!

Behind the Hotel Manisses 1661 Inn, there is a little farm that the owner of the hotel keeps.  It’s not like any other farm… because not only do they grow the vegetables for the Inn…they also have a collection of rare and exotic animals. You can feed the Llamas, Zedonks, Ostrich, Lemurs and Yaks!  But be careful… for Yak spit… it’s pretty gross.

Have Dinner at my favorite restaurant…

The Oar, 221 Jobs Hill Road  Block Island, RI Like The Oar On Facebook

Famous for it’s HUGE collection of oars that decorate the walls, ceiling and pretty much the whole place!  The oar has great food – especially their Sushi!  You can also play beanbags on the lawn while you wait for your table.  It’s really fun.

Buy something cool at…

East Of The River Nile Trading Company

http://eastoftherivernile.com/

One of the coolest stores on Block Island, they have stuff from ALL over the world.  Like t-shirts, crafts, jewelry, and stuff for your house.  The owner’s name is Ron and when he he’s not on the island he travels all over the world looking for interesting things. He is also really nice. I bought two awesome bracelets from Bali – one is all skulls!

Take Off For A Good Breakfast At Bethany’s Airport Diner on Block Island!

Bethany’s Airport Diner, Center Rd., Block Island, RI

Another surprise find on Block Island is Bethany’s Airport Diner, which is located at the Block Island Airport!  This Bethany’s Diner has been open for over 2 1/2 years and it replaced the original diner which opened in the 1950′s.

For this Sunday Diners, Dad and I had three special guests, my Mom!, and my Grandma and Poppey who live in PA and came on vacation with us.

Sometimes, not everyone can be happy with their breakfast.  My Mom, Dad and Grandma and Poppey had omelets… but they were not very happy with them.  I had “The Full Throttle” which is Two Pancakes, Two Eggs (I had mine scrambled), Two Sausages, Bacon and Two Hash Browns!  And it was AWESOME!  Which proves, sometimes it’s really hard to make everyone happy.

The best part of the Airport Diner is the outside dining area… because it’s right on the runway!!!  You can watch the planes take off and land while you eat.  That’s why it’s so popular with kids!

I asked Lou, who works for New England Airlines,

“How many times a day are there flights to Block Island?”

He said, “On an average summer day, New England Airlines arrives and takes off about 10 times a day from Westerly Rhode Island to Block Island State Airport.  There are also many private flights during the summer”.

That’s a lot of hungry fliers!

Attack Of Block Island’s Killer Donuts!!!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Payne’s Donuts, Block Island, Rhode Island

Every year, our family spends a week on Block Island.  Block Island is off the coast of Rhode Island and it is about 1 hour by ferry from Point Judith, Rhode Island (on the car ferry) You can also get there from New London, Connecticut or Montauk, New York.

Block Island is a very small island, you could probably drive around the whole island in about a half hour, but it is full of surprises like Payne’s who make The Killer Donut!

There are three types of Killer Donuts: Plain, Sugar and CinnamonThey are a little crunchy on the outside and really fluffy on the inside.  We were lucky we got ours when they were still hot!

I asked Charity Payne, whose Grandma Payne invented the Payne’s Killer Donut in 1963,

“What is the most popular Payne’s Killer Donut”

She said, “Cinnamon is our most popular, followed by the Sugar Donut”.

I ate all three and thought they were DEEEEE-Licious!
