HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM SUNDAY DINERS!

This is our first post of 2013.  Usually, at this time of the year, many people make resolutions to eat healthier or not eat junk food all of the time.  One of the ways that you can do this is by eating more organic foods which are healthier for you.  Today, we went to Greenleaf Organic Bakery and Café, in Wilton, where everything is organic, fresh and TASTY!

The first thing I noticed when I walked in were the displays of amazing pastries, croissants, cupcakes, tarts and the BIGGEST chocolate chip cookies I have ever seen.  The second thing you notice, is how good it smells! The walls are decorated with photos of food and fruit, and it is a good place for kids and adults too.

I looked at the menu before we left the house and already knew what I wanted — The Fruit Explosion  - Fresh organic cream, layered with organic strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, yogurt, granola, all topped off with chocolate hazelnut spread.  It was beyond good and… healthy at the same time.  It was also BIG!  Do you know what else was BIG? The Organic Hot Chocolate – which is made with real melted organic chocolate and whipped cream – it was GIANT!  Bigger than our cereal bowls at home – now that’s BIG!

After breakfast, we tried something that was new to the menu – a Fresh Fruit Tart made with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and vanilla custard with a delicious crust.  I hope this stays on the menu.

IMG-20130106-00244I spoke with Bola Osakwe, whose husband Paul, owns Greenleaf with Robyn Marvin and asked, “For those who don’t know, what does Organic mean?”

She told me that,”Organic foods are foods that are grown naturally, with no chemicals, or pesticides.

I asked “Do any of the ingredients came from local farms?”

Mrs. Osakawe told me that “We get our ingredients from many local farms like Ambler Farm which is right here in Wilton.”

I also met the Osakawe kids, Azikawe, Anyaora, and Anyanna and asked Azikawe who is five what he likes to have at Greenleaf. He told me that he likes everything at Greenleaf except for the croissants with the green stuff inside!  Here’s a picture of the spinach croissants he was talking about – they look pretty good to me!

Our Server, Peter Bazinet told me that his favorite baked item at Greenleaf is

“The French Donut stuffed with Vanilla Whipped Cream inside, you should come back for that in about a month when we make them again… usually when people start giving up their New Year’s resolutions!”

Eating Organic is a good, and tasty step to having a healthier New Year.

BREAKING NEWS! SUNDAY DINERS IS FEATURED ON NEWS 12 CONNECTICUT!

SUNDAY DINERS IS BACK… FINALLY!

We had a very busy few weeks, and have not been able to post – but now we’re back!

In July, Sunday Diners was interviewed for a feature story on News 12 Connecticut. The story was filmed at Wave Hill Breads in Norwalk, which our readers know is one of our favorites.  I was interviewed by Sarah Hagen, who is a News 12 reporter and was so nice to us – she and her cameraman really made dad and I feel calm about being on TV.

The story was on News 12 in August, but many of our readers could not see it, because they don’t live in CT — so we hope you enjoy it!

Here are some photos Dad took while we were filming.

Visit Village Luncheonette on facebook

Village Luncheonette has been serving good food in Wilton for over 30 years.

You can tell that it is really popular with kids, because there is a HUGE bulletin board filled with pictures of kids who come to the Luncheonette.  It’s also popular with some very famous people like Harry Connick Jr. (a famous musician), and Kristine Lilly who is a very famous soccer player who won a Gold Medal in the 1996 and 2004 Olympics on the US Soccer team — who is from Wilton!  I think that the reason why people who are famous and not so famous love the Luncheonette is because they have great food and the service makes everyone feel important!

I had a Chocolate Milk (made fresh — because it has to b made fresh for it to be good!) and Oreo Pancakes with a side order of Bacon.  Oreo Pancakes?! You might ask, “Just what exactly are Oreo Pancakes?” Well, the answer is quite simple — it is a buttermilk pancake with crushed chunks of real Oreo cookies mixed into the batter.  And they are sweeeeeet! — So sweet, you don’t really need syrup. They are super good and were so big I couldn’t finish them.

Village Luncheonette is a real neighborhood place, with lots of regular customers and the people who work there, seem to know everyone’s name.

I spoke to Katina Andreadis, our server and Anna, whose uncle owns the Village Luncheonette:

Me and Katina Andreadis

What is the most popular breakfast item on the menu for kids?

She said “They love the Oreo pancakes, just like you had, and the Blueberry pancakes with Whipped Cream… I always make them into smiley faces”

She also told me that,”If you come here for lunch and dinner, our Pizza is really good!”

One the coolest things about the Luncheonette, is they have a flat screen TV which was turned on to ESPN — but Anna told me that they sometimes also put on cartoons. But since Katina was working, who loves sports, it was tuned today to ESPN. Which was okay with me!

Orem’s Serves A Breakfast Big Enough For A Lumberjack… But Good For Kids Too!

Orem’s Diner, 167 Danbury Road, Wilton CT

Orem’s has been serving Wilton and other towns great food since 1921!  I’ve been going to Orem’s since I was a baby.

Orem’s is very popular with kids and adults, so, if you go on a weekend morning, be prepared to wait for a table… but the wait won’t be very long, and it will be worth it.

Their menu is HUGE and there are lots of different delicious choices for breakfast.

I had the “Lumberjack” breakfast, which is 3 Pancakes, Two Eggs (I had mine scrambled), Bacon, 2 Sausages AND… a slice of Ham!  It as BIG enough for a Lumberjack – and I could barely finish it!  The chocolate milk was freshly made and cold!

I asked the manager, Chris Papanikolaou, whose family owns Orem’s, how many eggs does Orem’s use on a Sunday:

He said “Wow, a lot, during a typical week, we go through 20 X 60 cases of eggs

That ‘s a lot of eggs!

Mr. Chris also told me that pancakes are the most popular item on the menu for kids.
