BREAKING NEWS! SUNDAY DINERS IS FEATURED ON NEWS 12 CONNECTICUT!

SUNDAY DINERS IS BACK… FINALLY!

We had a very busy few weeks, and have not been able to post – but now we’re back!

In July, Sunday Diners was interviewed for a feature story on News 12 Connecticut. The story was filmed at Wave Hill Breads in Norwalk, which our readers know is one of our favorites.  I was interviewed by Sarah Hagen, who is a News 12 reporter and was so nice to us – she and her cameraman really made dad and I feel calm about being on TV.

The story was on News 12 in August, but many of our readers could not see it, because they don’t live in CT — so we hope you enjoy it!

Here are some photos Dad took while we were filming.

Estia’s American In Darien… A Little Taste of Long Island In CT!

Estia’s American, 1020 Post Road Darien www.estiasamerican.com

Today we visited Estia’s American, in Darien.  We wanted to try something special, because our friend Anne Marie was visiting from New York. So, we decided on Estia’s, which was originally in Long Island by the beaches in the Hamptons.  Anne Marie went to the original Estia’s and liked it.

Estia’s is very hip, they have a bar, cool art on the walls and lots of books, it has a very homey feeling.

And now about the food.  All four of us had different things. My dad, Anne Marie and I were happy with our choices… Mom liked hers… but just thought it was just “OK”, she had a California Omelet with just jack cheese and avocado…  which is very healthy but not very flavorful.  Now, Dad had the Red Flannel Hash which is chorizo, potato, peppers, onions topped with two scrambled eggs – I tried that and I LOVED it — it was spicy and really good.  Anne Marie and I both had the Short Stack — she had blueberry (she wanted banana, but they were out of them) and I had chocolate chip pancakes.  They were very tasty and fluffy. We both had a side of Bacon, which was crispy and HUGE – we really only needed to order one.

I spoke with Ell who is the bartender at Estias and asked her, “Where did the name Estia come from?”

She said, “The restaurant was started in the Hamptons in a town called Amagansett.  When this owner bought it he kept the name because people knew it.  I’m not sure where the original name came from but our owner says Estia stands for EST-ablished I-n A-magansett”.

I also asked her what her favorite item on the menu was for breakfast.  Ell likes the A’s Pop —  a breakfast bowl with chicken, Organic Red Quinoa, Egg Whites, Veggies and Avocado.

That sounds Healthy & Flavorful – maybe that’s what Mom should have next time!

Nice and Cheesy at the Darien Diner!

Darien Diner, 171 Post Rd, Darien, CT

Sorry we haven’t posted for two weeks :(   I have been SO busy with stuff, like school, sports and I went to visit my grandma in Lancaster, PA (I’ll be telling you about that later!).

Two weeks ago, we wanted to try Swanky Franks, a legendary Norwalk hot dog place that is now serving breakfast – but – they were closed until 11 AM on Sundays, so, we went to the Darien Diner instead!  And it was good!  I had been there before for dinner with my friend Alexander, but was my first time for breakfast.

The Darien Diner has been there from the 1960′s and it has been owned for 4 years by the same people who own the Post Road Diner! It’s a masterpiece for decorations!  Like the Post Road Diner it has lots of cool cars and old Coca-Cola merchandise.

I had the “Kitchen Sink” Omelet which had everything in it but the kitchen sink! Get it? It was VERY cheesy, at one point I took a bite and got a HUGE “cheese pull”  — that’s what my friend Dave Straiton (who is a BIG TV Director) told me that they call that in the TV commercial business!  Here’s a picture of my cheese pull:

I talked to the assistant manager, Jimmy and asked:

What is your favorite item for breakfast?

He said “I really like the Breakfast Sandwich, but everything here is really good and made fresh”.

The Darien Diner is also really great for dinner –  especially their burgers and shakes!

A Sweet Breakfast At Sugar Bowl In Darien!

Sugar Bowl, 1033 Post Road, Darien, CT

I knew breakfast at the Sugar Bowl in Darien must be good, because they have been around for over 65 years, and it was!  We’re lucky we got there early, because soon it  was packed with kids and adults who come for the food and the cool decorations!

Sugar Bowl does an awesome job of decorating the restaurant, and right now there are Halloween decorations up. And when it comes to decorating, they really mean business!!!  And I’m not just talking about a paper skeleton and a few pumpkins — they have over a hundred decorations just hanging from the ceiling including pumpkins, bats, witches, skeletons and lots of spider webs.

And the food is just as good as the decorations.  I had a short stack of pancakes, which were very fluffy, so fluffy that you don’t even have to chew them (but you should), bacon, which was really good and crispy and a sausage patty.  The only thing that was  a little disappointing was that the chocolate milk was not freshly made — but — at least, it was the organic kind :)

I asked our server Flor, “Does Sugar Bowl decorate for every holiday?”

She said, “Yes, we decorate for Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s, Easter, July 4th,  Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! — All the big holidays.”

I also asked her, “What is the most popular breakfast with kids?”

Flor said “The short stack of pancakes with a smiley face is the most popular”

Next time I’ll make sure to ask for a smiley face on my short stack!

Something else that Sugar Bowl is famous for is Brian’s Homemade Lemon Cake definitely try this when you visit.  Dad and I got some to go and it’s really AWESOME — it’s super sweet but it’s also sour and it’s really dense — YUM!!!!!
